COURSE CONTENT:
MODULE 1: CPH001 - CAMERAS, LENSES AND THE DIGITAL IMAGE
This module starts off gently, easing you back into study mode with an in-depth look at the types and features of digital cameras on the market today, the different lenses, when to use which one, and the accessories you can get to go with them. We then investigate the digital image. What an image file actually is, the different file formats, size, resolution, resizing, re-sampling and the technical jargon that goes along with it. In the later stages of this module, you start to get familiar with your camera, investigating the menus, buttons, switches and dials that will ultimately give you control over your camera and your images.
MODULE 2: CPH002 - EXPOSURE - SHUTTER SPEED AND APERTURE
In this module, we start to get serious. We are looking at the role that shutter speed and aperture play in determining the outcome of your image. You will learn the relationship between these elements, and how to master these settings in differing situations to blur movement, freeze the action or modify the depth of field whilst maintaining correct exposure. Focus points and the hyper focal distance also come into play. You will begin to understand the conceptual process of thinking about what you want an image to look like, and selecting appropriate settings to create it. This module is very hands on. It is the first step in taking control of your camera and having a say in the outcome of the images you take.
MODULE 3: CPH003 - LIGHT, EXPOSURE AND CONTROL
Ever wondered why the camera sees and captures images differently to what your eye can see? In Module 3 this is explained. You will learn how to see like your camera. The third element, ISO is added into the equation as we look at light, where it comes from, how to measure light and how to work with it. We will determine the dynamic range of your camera, what this means and the advantages this gives you as a photographer. You will be introduced to the Histogram. Every image has one. Learn how to read it, understand it, and use it to make exposure adjustments on the fly.
MODULE 4: CPH004 - THE COLOUR OF LIGHT AND HOW TO USE IT
You will find this Module particularly interesting and enlightening. It begins with a detailed look at colour theory, colour systems, colour models, spaces and mapping. It explores the colour temperature in different lighting conditions, and introduces the white balance function on your camera. You will begin to understand the differing colour, direction, quality and quantity of natural light at different times of the day, in different weather conditions and learn to use this to your best advantage. Moving indoors, this module examines the types and styles of artificial lighting equipment on the market today and how and when to use it.
MODULE 5: CPH005 - STYLE AND COMPOSITION
Now that you have the basic fundamentals under control, it is time to bring it all together and start to really have some fun. This module looks at techniques to help you avoid common problems and provides loads of insight into effective image composure, blending backgrounds and foregrounds, focal points, silhouettes, working with reflections, leading and directing the eye and the list goes on. Free-thinking and creativity are encouraged. Learn to pre-visualise your images, put your theory into action and you will see the beginning of your own style emerging in your images.
MODULE 6: CPH006 - THE FINAL TOUCHES IN PHOTOSHOP
Welcome to the world of post-production. The first half of this module introduces you to RAW power. This is the power of processing RAW images. What you will learn in this section will blow you away. We will teach you how you can save images you would previously have deleted, correct mistakes even the best of us make from time to time, and work-arounds when the elements were working against you. In the second section, we explore the possibilities with Adobe Photoshop. You will learn how to give your images the WOW factor. How to make your images “POP”. You will learn how to work with layers, apply filters and make colour corrections. You will even learn how to turn grey skies to blue and remove unwanted tourists (or previous boyfriends/girlfriends) from your images. How good is that!
MODULE 7: CPH007 - PHOTOGRAPHY SPECIALTIES
